Steven Wilson : 7.2.2018 – Halle 622 Zürich
Heard Steven Wilsons name for the first time two years ago at the Aristocrats concert, Moods, a concert which i had appreciated very much. Two of the then guitarist and drummer of Steven Wilson band who played a great gig made me curious to hear more of their other band. So, I didn’t hesitate to buy a ticket quite a while ago, when I finally found that Wilson came to play Switzerland. Yeah, well, I do admit, I was briefly disappointed, when neither Guthrie Govan nor Marco Minnemann were playing in the 2018 line-up of Wilsons band. Yet the music took over immediately and sometimes, it’s so good just to listen.
The concert took me in from the second note, I had missed the very beginning, due to slow security and a big rain, needing my and so many other jackets going to the cloakroom. But from that very second song on, I knew I was in for a treat. I definitely and simply do like the sound of this band and appreciated most songs, maybe also because there was a great basic mood, and at the same time a real variety during the concert. I enjoyed the rather extensive comments by Steven Wilson himself, as much as the good atmosphere in the public.
I also liked the fact that there were two sets, no waste of music to fetch a second beer and a chance to take a break of the intense concert. And to change slightly of where I was standing, sorry for the big guys, I know you want to enjoy concerts from the front too, but I was happy to leave you behind for the second set. Which took me in as much as the first. I was in the music, in the here and the now, and must have caught a pretty good spot to hear all that great sound. The middle of the hall seems to have done the trick.
Not knowing the band, it was discovery for me, and even if I am most of the time happy with intense guitars, I simply enjoyed the whole evening. I am relistening to the CDs now, and I can’t find half of the presence and of the sound in my stereo, which is probably due to the fact, that it is tuned down to not overwhelm my neighbours, who have clearly other likings. Still, a great moment in time to relisten again and againd, and I am very much looking forward to another occasion to listen to Steven Wilson play live.
